HP OfficeJet Pro 8035e All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The scanner document feeder does not see the original fed thru it. The original feeds thru perfectly well, but the image that appears on my pc screen is blank, as tho the doc fed upside down. It scans okay from the flat bed including multi-page docs, but of course multi-page feed by hand one at a time. An error msg appears on printer screen says "not able to pick up the original" (no err# or msg#) but in reality the original feeds thru with no issue at all.
It has been this way since I first set it up.  I have uninstalled and re-installed the printer. A forum/support person via chat insisted my paper was krinkled or bent or otherwise rejected, but this is not the case. I have scanned docs I have printed, pages from my reem never used that I marked with sharpie, and docs I from others - the feeder picks up and runs them right through with no apparent issue.

- could the feeder pulls my originals thru but not trying to scan because it believes from the start the original is mutilated?

- could it be that it tries to scan but the scan head is out of position and can't "see" the original going through and believes the page didn't pick up?
It is my opinion, as a technically capable person, that the scan head doesn't move to the left as it should under the doc feed window, so it doesn't "see" the image. It's view is blocked by the frame of the flat bed. I would think there would be a sensor to detect that, but that's my guess.
The darn doc feeder DOESN'T WORK. Please, do something about it. If you have another idea, I'll try it.  I don't want to scan multi-page originals by hand until this thing dies.  Thank you.

This issue is my post - I should have noted that this problem exists when I scan with 2 different applications - hp's and one downloaded from Microsoft.

Hi @NMB-wi,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like the document feeder of your HP OfficeJet Pro 8035e is experiencing an issue where it doesn't properly scan, despite feeding the documents through correctly. Here are some potential causes and solutions.

  • Scan Head Position Issue: As you mentioned, the scan head might not be moving into the correct position to scan the document when fed through the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder). If the scan head is not aligned or is obstructed, it may not be able to scan the document, despite it feeding through. If you're comfortable, you could check the ADF area for any physical obstructions or misalignment. Otherwise, this could require service if the scan head is misaligned.
  • Sensor Issue: There might be a sensor in the ADF that is not detecting the document properly or is malfunctioning. If the sensor thinks the page is "not picked up," it could lead to the error message and blank scans. This could be related to dust, dirt, or a faulty sensor. Cleaning the ADF rollers and sensor areas (usually found near the paper path) might help resolve this.
  • Incorrect Settings or Software Issue: Sometimes, scanning settings can cause issues with the document feeder, even though flatbed scanning works fine. Ensure that you are selecting the correct document feeder settings in both the HP Smart app and any other scanning software you are using.
  • Firmware Issue: It's possible that there's a bug in the printer's firmware affecting the ADF. Check if there's a firmware update available for your printer on HP's website. Installing the latest firmware can often fix issues like this.
  • ADF Roller/Drive Mechanism: Although your feeder seems to pick up the paper and feed it through without issue, it's still possible that the roller mechanism or drive that moves the paper isn't fully engaging with the scanning component, causing a miscommunication that results in blank scans.

To troubleshoot further:

  • Try performing a test scan using the document feeder and watch the scanner's behavior closely. Listen for any unusual sounds or delays that might indicate a mechanical issue.
  • Ensure that the ADF is free of any paper debris or obstructions that might be blocking the scanning area.
  • If you haven’t already, try resetting the printer to factory settings in case there’s an issue with the internal configurations.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
