HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer

I am trying to print invitations on 80lb cardstock with a "print-your-own" wedding invitation kit.  I have set the paper size and have been successful in printing on regular paper cut to the same size as the cardstock.  However, when I load the blank invitation cardstock, the invitation will not feed.  The printer sounds like it is printing on the invitation, but at the end of the job, I get a paper jam error. When I remove the invitation from the printer, there is no ink on it, just some black marks on the back from the rollers.  I have tried changing the paper type to HP Matte Brochure or Professional Paper and also Plain Paper, Thick.  What else could I try?

@6978_home_user, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds frustrating to deal with paper jams, especially when preparing for such an important event! Here are a few suggestions that might help resolve the issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978:

Things You Can Try

Feed One Sheet at a Time

  • Load a single sheet of the invitation cardstock.
  • Do not stack multiple thick sheets — this can prevent feeding.

Use the Rear Access Path

  • The 6978 does not have a dedicated rear tray, but:
  • Open the rear access door to inspect rollers.
  • Clean the rollers with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water. They may be slipping due to dust or glossy coating on the card.

Change Paper Type to 'Cardstock' or 'Heavy'

  • Try using HP Professional Paper > Heavyweight or HP Matte Presentation Paper if available.
  • You may also test with Other Specialty Paper if your driver or HP Smart app supports it.

Adjust Page Settings in Software

  • Go to your print dialog > Paper/Quality tab:
  • Choose the correct paper size (as you already did).
  • Set Print Quality to Best.
  • Disable Duplex printing if it’s enabled — thick paper won’t duplex correctly.

Manual Help (Gently Push)

  • As the printer begins to try to pull the cardstock, gently assist the feed by pushing the cardstock in until you feel it catch. Be careful not to force it.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for the response, but unfortunately I am still unable to print these invitations.  I tried cleaning the rollers and pushing the paper to help it feed.  The printer sounded like it was printing and it spit the paper out at the end, but nothing on the card.  I think I've got to go to a backup plan.
