HP OfficeJetPro 8720
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

Hello,

I have an HP OfficeJetPro 8720. I frequently print with 65 lb cardstock. I am using the same cardstock pack I have printed successfully with for several months, but the printer has suddenly started feeding the cardstock through without printing the image I'm sending through. It sometimes says it's jammed, despite paper coming out. It always sends a blank piece of paper through, with some ink mess on the back. If I put plain paper through, it prints the image.

I followed HP's suggestions for this issue, but it didn't work.

I am out of warranty and looking for a solution before scrapping the printer. Could the rollers need replaced?

Thank you for any help you can offer!

Product introduced March 2016

I had an OfficeJet Pro 8740 - wonderful printer.  I did not have it long (one year as a loaner).

I had exactly one problem with it jamming - and there was actually a tiny bit of paper in the bottom of the paper path.

That said, in March your printer might be as old as five years.

Yes, could be rollers, could be dirt (from you remarks, I assume you've cleaned the printer as best can be done).

Black or Color Ink Not Printing, Other Print Quality Issues

Yes, could be rollers out of adjustment, worn path, "other" issues due to age and use.

Could be improperly stored card paper (just a thought, no need to defend)...

Were it me, I'd consider replacing the 8720 with something equally robust.

I am not selling you - FYI only:  I replaced my old 8630 (another workhorse) and that 8740 loaner with an OfficeJet Pro 9025 printer.  Same caliber as the 8630 and the 8740 - the 9025 does almost "everything" - even has two-sided single-pass scan.  Nice.  Purchased the 9025 in 2019 - no problems so far printing on "whatever" (card, photo, brochure, plain paper...)

What else?

If you want it repaired, HP won't touch it - but you might be able to take it to a local printer repair house to get an estimate on what it would take to get it working again with your heavier paper.

Thank you for your response. We've sadly only had the printer for a year and a half. Printers can be so frustrating! I will take your recommendation of we end up needing a new one!

You are welcome.

A bit over a year is not a long time for this printer model.

That said, hard use can take it's toll.  ?

You could certainly try cleaning it again - might just be stubborn.

What else?

Take a good look through Category Troubleshooting  and see if there is anything you have not tried...

Good Luck.

Stay Safe.
