Hi @Slamski1,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are trying to use the heavier cardstock with the HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Printer can sometimes cause paper jams if the paper is not properly loaded or exceeds the printer’s handling capacity. Here are some tips to minimize the risk of jams when printing on cardstock:

1. Check Printer Specifications

  • Confirm that your cardstock is within the printer’s supported weight range. The HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 supports media weights up to 120 lb (350 gsm) for specific paper types.
  • Refer to the user manual for exact specifications.

2. Use the Rear Tray (if available)

  • If your printer has a rear paper feed, use it for cardstock. This provides a straighter path for the paper, reducing the chances of a jam.

3. Adjust Paper Type Settings

  • In the print dialog on your macOS:
    1. Open the print settings.
    2. Select Media & Quality or similar.
    3. Choose Cardstock or a heavier paper setting under the paper type dropdown. This adjusts the printer’s handling and ink application.

4. Load Cardstock Properly

  • Load only a few sheets at a time in the main tray to avoid overloading.
  • Ensure the cardstock is flat, not curled or bent, and aligned with the guides.

5. Adjust the Paper Guides

  • Slide the paper guides snugly against the cardstock. Loose guides can cause feeding issues.

6. Fan and Align Cardstock

  • Fan the cardstock stack to reduce sticking.
  • Tap the stack on a flat surface to align the edges before loading.

7. Clean Rollers

  • If you’ve experienced frequent jams, clean the paper feed rollers with a lint-free cloth and distilled water to ensure they grip the cardstock properly.

8. Print Slowly

  • Set the printer to a slower print speed if this option is available in the print settings. This allows heavier cardstock to feed more smoothly.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
