Carriage jam

Hi @Tadw1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP printer is experiencing a "carriage jam" error, where the print carriage cannot move properly, follow these steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

**1. Turn Off and Unplug the Printer

  • Turn off the printer using the power button.:
  • Disconnect the printer from the power source. Wait for about 60 seconds before proceeding.

**2. Check for Obstructions

  • Open the door that gives access to the cartridges. This may be at the front or side of the printer, depending on the model.
  • Look for any paper, debris, or objects blocking the print carriage’s movement. Carefully remove any obstructions you find.
  • Gently move the print carriage from side to side. It should move smoothly without resistance. If it’s stuck, check for any physical barriers or jammed paper.

**3. Check and Reinstall Ink Cartridges

  • Take out the ink cartridges from the print carriage. Inspect them for any visible damage or leaks.
  • Reinsert the cartridges, ensuring they are seated properly and clicked into place. Verify that the cartridges are compatible with your printer model.

**4. Inspect and Clean Printhead

  • If your printer allows, remove the printhead carefully.
  • Gently clean the printhead contacts with a lint-free cloth moistened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol. Allow it to dry completely before reinstalling.

**5. Check Paper Path and Rollers

  • Ensure there is no paper caught in the paper path. Remove any small pieces of paper or debris.
  • Clean the paper feed rollers with a lint-free cloth. Slightly dampen the cloth with water or isopropyl alcohol if needed.

**6. Reset the Printer

  • After unplugging the printer, plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes clear temporary errors and reset the printer’s internal components.

**7. Update Printer Firmware:

  • Visit the HP Support website to see if there are any firmware updates available for your printer model. Download and install any updates.

**8. Perform a Printer Self-Test:

  • Use the printer’s menu to perform a self-test or diagnostic check. This can help identify if there are any specific issues with the printer's hardware.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
