I have a document that is formatted for 8.5x14 paper. The M255DW is supposed to be able to print on that paper, but in fact it does not. I can "extend" the length of the paper tray to accept that paper, but then the tray cannot close and the printer does not print.  I can only assume that the product description is wrong(?)_

No, the specification is not wrong.

When loaded the tray will extend out the front of the printer around 2 inches. That is normal. You need to ensure that you set the paper type on the printer to Legal size. User guide download here http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06434360.pdf
