This printer is a year and a half old? Maybe? All of a sudden the other day it wouldn't print anymore. Said E4 error code. I checked all the usual suspects, nothing. Have watched endless videos, and nothing. I finally took the entire top off today, and STILL NOTHING. There IS NO PAPER JAM. I followed instructions to check a few areas, cleaned a few things, then it briefly threw an E3 error code...but then right back to E4. Everything is rolling as it should, moving, cleaned, etc. What am I missing?! This is ridiculous.

Hi @NicoleG999,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I am sorry to hear that you see E4 error code on an HP Smart Tank 5101 generally indicates a paper jam, but as you've mentioned that there are no visible obstructions and other common troubleshooting steps haven't resolved the issue, I would request you to please follow the steps:

Power Reset

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord for at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug back in and restart.
  • This clears temporary error states.

Run HP Smart Diagnostics

  • Install the HP Smart app on your PC or phone.
  • Use Diagnose & Fix under printer settings.
  • This can reset error codes and confirm sensor issues.

Firmware Update

  • Go to HP Support → Drivers & Downloads → enter HP Smart Tank 5101.
  • Download and install the latest firmware.
  • Updates often fix false jam detection.

Clean Paper Feed Rollers

  • Use a lint‑free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Wipe the rollers in the input tray and rear access.
  • Rotate them manually to clean the full surface.
  • Let dry completely before reloading paper.

Take care and have an amazing day!
