I've loaded size A2 envelopes into my printer. I've changed the paper type and size on the menu. The printer picks up the envelope with no problem, prints on it, but when it goes to push it through to delivery... it gets stuck right where you would change the ink cartridges. It gives me a paper jam error every time, like it won't continue the feed, why is that?

I looked up A2 envelopes (simple Google search).

One thing I find is that these envelopes come in several types and weights.

For example, I found 70lb / 105gsm from one envelope manufacturer.

If your envelope is one of the heavier made types, it might exceed the weight supported for envelopes (24lb).

Printer Specifications for HP OfficeJet Pro 8700 Printers

Tray
Type
Weight
Capacity
Tray 1
Paper
60 to 105 g/m2 (16 to 28 lb bond)
Up to 250 sheets of plain paper (25 mm [1 inch] stacked)
Photo paper
220 to 280 g/m2 (80 lb bond)
Up to 50 sheets (17 mm [0.67 inch] stacked)
Envelopes
75 to 90 g/m2 (20 to 24 lb bond envelope)
Up to 30 envelopes (17 mm [0.67 inch] stacked)
Cards
Up to 200 g/m2 (110 lb index)
Up to 50 cards

What to do?

Not sure.

If the weight of the envelope is the problem,

Try / Consider

For example, depending on how you are creating the envelope,

Try pre-selecting Media / Paper Type

For example, Select "Brochure" or "Thick Paper" (any heavy paper that is not photo paper) in Preferences and / or in EWS

Will this work?

Maybe - success depends on

  • The envelope itself - weight and composition (flap type, paper type, color)
  • Whether the printer can be made to accept the combination of "other than plain paper" and that fact that this is an envelope
  • The software / method used to view / create / submit the job
