Envy Photo 7100 printer doesn't recognise 4x6 photo paper

I've tried all the previous advice about cleaning the rollers, disconnecting power, pulling tray out and in again, trying just 1 sheet of paper, trying a different type of paper.  It just doesn't want to recognise the 4x6 paper.  It's perfectly fine with A4 paper

Install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software

Alert the printer to the paper loaded in the tray

Select Printing Preferences Shortcut for the current job - adjust the settings

Create the job and submit to the printer

Printing Software

What?

There are two parts to this:

• HP Smart application - supports printing and scanning PDF and Photos / Images.  HP Smart is supported in many regions and on many newer networked printers - The app is available from the  Microsoft Store .  HP Smart requires that you sign in using your HP Account credentials.
• HP Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software - supports printing and scanning from the web, from other programs (for example, Word), and access to the full range of Printing Preferences / Shortcuts.  The software includes HP Scan.  No Sign-in required.

When installed,

HP Smart is listed in Settings > Apps > Apps and Features

HP Smart is never listed in Programs and Features

When installed,

The Full Driver printer software is listed in Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features

And

The Full Driver printer software can also show up in Settings > Apps > Apps and Features

Load Paper - Alert Printer to Paper Size & Type

Next,

Load the paper according to the instructions in the User Guide

Pages 15-16

Adjust / Edit / Modify Paper Size & Type

Open Printer Tray,

NOTE

If you are having trouble with getting the printer to accept (new) paper,

Remove the stack of paper from the tray

Lightly flex (do not fan) the paper to separate the single sheets

Re-stack together so the edges match along all sides

Return the paper to the tray

Wait a few seconds

Close Tray

Check / Adjust / Retain the Paper Size and Type at the Printer Display Panel

NOTE  This Section is not applicable to printers lacking a printer display panel.

Look for a message on the printer display panel.

Click Modify / Change / No-Yes (wording varies),

Select / Adjust the paper size and type, Click OK

Select Custom

Notes: 

• Not all printers support size “Custom”

• "Copy" dislikes mismatched content / paper size and type.  For example, select for Tray:  Standard sized "Letter" / "A4" plain paper

NOTES

• EWS is available on many network connected printers.
• Laser Printers - Options and Settings - availability and location - are likely (and frequently) different.

If EWS is supported on your printer,

Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to view / configure your printer.

No Size?  If the size of the Paper Size is not included in the Drop-down list, Select Custom

Copy dislikes mismatched content / paper size and type.  If / As available,  Check / Update Copy settings  in EWS > Copy > Settings > Copy Defaults

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper Management

Click Apply to save changes

Select / leave Printing Preferences Shortcut to "Everyday Printing" or something equally benign.

UNCHECK (clear box) Let Windows manage my default printer
