My HP 6978 all of a sudden is having "out of paper" issues. It will go to feed paper through for a print job and the paper goes halfway, stops and I get an error that I am out of paper. Sometimes I don't get an error at all - I just cannot print. I have tried the printer reset, resetting my computer, updating my firmware - nothing has helped. I am very frustrated as this just started happening one day and I cannot get it to stop happening. I am using genuine HP copy and print paper. I have loved this printer and don't want to have to replace it. Help!

Hi @skrwolf,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand how frustrating it could be It sounds like you've already taken several troubleshooting steps to address the issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 printer. Since the problem persists despite your efforts, here are a few additional steps you can try:
Check the Paper Tray and Feeder:
- Ensure that the paper tray is loaded correctly and not overfilled.
- Make sure the paper guides in the tray are adjusted properly to fit the size of the paper.
- Check for any obstructions or debris inside the paper tray and feeder that may be causing the paper to jam or not feed correctly.
Inspect Paper:
- Check the paper you're using for any damage, such as tears, bends, or moisture. Even a small imperfection can cause feeding issues.
- Try using a different stack of paper to see if the problem persists.
Clean Paper Feed Rollers:
- Paper feed rollers can accumulate dust and debris over time, leading to feeding problems. You can clean them manually using a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water or isopropyl alcohol.
- Refer to your printer's manual for instructions on accessing and cleaning the paper feed rollers. HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer User Guide
Reset Printer Settings:
- Try resetting the printer to its default settings. This can sometimes resolve software-related issues that may be causing the paper feed problem.
- Navigate through the printer's menu or refer to the user manual for instructions on how to perform a factory reset.
Check for Firmware Updates:
- Ensure that your printer's firmware is up to date. Sometimes, firmware updates contain bug fixes and improvements that can address issues like paper feeding problems.
- You mentioned updating firmware, but double-check to confirm that you have the latest version installed.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.-
