@johng243, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The "Out of Paper" message on your HP ENVY 5660 printer, even when paper is loaded and there's no visible jam, is a known issue and can often be resolved with a few troubleshooting steps. Here's what you can try:
Reset the Printer
This can clear false error messages:
- Turn the printer on.
- Wait until it's idle and silent.
- Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
- Unplug the cord from the wall outlet.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the cord back into the wall outlet (not a surge protector).
- Reconnect the cord to the printer.
- Turn the printer back on if it doesn’t start automatically.
Clean the Paper Feed Rollers
Dust or debris on the rollers can prevent paper from feeding properly:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Remove all paper from the input tray.
- Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water to gently clean the rollers.
- Let them dry completely before plugging the printer back in.
Check Paper Type and Loading
- Use clean, white, 8.5 x 11-inch paper.
- Make sure the paper is not curled or wrinkled.
- Fan the stack before loading to prevent sheets from sticking.
- Adjust the paper width guides so they’re snug but not tight.
Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers
Since you're using macOS 10.13 High Sierra, ensure your drivers are up to date. You can download the latest drivers from the HP Support site.
Bypass the Alignment Page
If the printer is stuck trying to print the alignment page:
- Cancel the alignment from the printer screen or HP software.
- Try printing a regular document to see if the error persists.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
