HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus. The machine has worked great until now. The document feeder has stopped working. When the feeder tries to get the document, it makes a grinding sound and the error message comes back to Reload the original.

I was trying to figure out how to separate the document feeder from the printer and discovered that the three hinges just slip out of their slots. I didn't disconnect the electrical connection. After I put the hinges back in their slots and tried to run the feeder, it worked. My thought is that whatever was misaligned in the gearing fell back into place. My only fear is that it could occur again and will not fall back in place.
