HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer

The description below was submitted by another person in 2022.  I have the same problem and am unable to resolve it. I would appreciate assistance.

My 8610 is an an infinite loop.

I turn it on, it complains about a damaged cartridge, so I open the front door to replace.

When I open the door, the carriage does NOT move, and the error message now says to close the door to print.

I close the door, and the original damaged cartridge error message returns.

I had been having trouble with my cartridges, so I must add that I tried to reset the printer, by pressing the screen in the bottom left corner four times when powering up. Then I got to the maintenance menu, and did the simplest reset, and now I have this problem.

But I cant get to any reset menu now, and I have tried unplugging, waiting and plugging back in, and I have tried forcefully moving the cartridge, but nothing works.

I have read the other post about the 8600 carriage stuck, no help there.

Help please!

---   Thank you.

Hi @rvbriscar,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the carriage stuck issue with the HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 is often caused by either a mechanical jam, an internal error, or corrupted firmware settings. Below is a detailed troubleshooting guide to help resolve the problem:

Step 1: Check for Physical Obstructions

  1. Turn off the Printer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Open the Printer Door and inspect the carriage path for any debris, jammed paper, or obstructions.
    • Look under the carriage and remove any visible blockages.
  3. Manually Move the Carriage:
    • If the carriage is stuck, gently push it from side to side to ensure it moves freely.

Step 2: Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Unplug the printer's power cord from both the printer and the wall outlet.
  2. Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  3. While unplugged, press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds.
  4. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet and then reconnect it to the printer.
  5. Turn on the printer and check if the carriage moves.

Step 3: Inspect and Reseat the Ink Cartridges

  1. Open the printer door and remove all the ink cartridges.
  2. Check for damage on the cartridges (leaking, bent contacts, etc.).
  3. Clean the electrical contacts on both the cartridges and the carriage using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol.
  4. Reseat the cartridges securely and close the door.

Step 4: Perform a Semi-Full Reset

If you can't access the maintenance menu via the touchscreen:

  1. Power off the Printer and unplug it.
  2. Press and hold the Power button, and while holding it, press the Cancel button and the Resume button simultaneously.
  3. Continue holding these buttons while plugging the printer back in.
  4. Release all buttons when the printer powers on.

This should attempt a semi-full reset, which clears certain internal errors.

Step 5: Update Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer

If the carriage moves after troubleshooting but the error persists:

  1. Visit the HP Software and Drivers page for your printer model.
  2. Download and install the latest firmware update on your printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Gaya1239

Thank you for your timely response to my post. Unfortunately, the problem has not been resolved. I neglected to mention that I receive a cartridge problem error at power-up, even though I have cleaned the contacts and nozzles on the printhead.

Re: Step 1 - There are no physical obstructions but the carriage cannot be moved. It is stuck to the right.

Re: Step 2 - Hard Reset fails. Cartridge problem message displays immediately.

Re; Step 3 - Unable to perform (see step 1 results).

Re: Step 4 - Unable to access maintenance menu after Cartridge problem message displays.

Re; Step 5 - Firmware update failed. Does not allow me to to access the checkbox in 'printer selection' . Unable to perform the update. Driver update also failed.

My task now is to find a way to release the printhead and cartridges. I believe that is my biggest challenge.

Thank you for your assistance.
