@Yongqing, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're seeing a paper jam alert on your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw, but no paper is visible. Let's walk through a few steps to help resolve this:

Power Cycle the Printer

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait for 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on. This can reset the jam sensor.

Check All Paper Paths Thoroughly

Even small scraps of paper can trigger a jam alert. Please check the following areas:

  • Input Tray: Remove all paper and inspect inside.
  • Output Tray: Look for any stuck paper.
  • Toner Cartridge Area:
    • Open the front door.
    • Remove all toner cartridges.
    • Lift the paper path cover and check for any jammed paper.
  • Rear Access Door:
    • Open the rear door and inspect the rollers and path.
  • ADF (Automatic Document Feeder):
    • Open the ADF cover and remove any jammed paper.
    • Check the ADF input tray and output tray.

Clean the Paper Path Sensors

Sometimes, dust or tiny paper bits can block sensors.

  • Use a can of compressed air or a soft brush to gently clean the paper path and sensor areas.

Check for Damaged or Warped Paper

  • Ensure the paper is not curled, damp, or torn.
  • Use only HP-recommended paper types and sizes.

Update Firmware

Outdated firmware can cause false jam alerts.

Reset the Printer

If the issue persists:

  • On the printer control panel, go to Setup > Service > Restore Defaults.
  • This will reset the printer settings (note: you may need to reconfigure Wi-Fi and preferences afterward).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
