HP ENVY 4520 All-in-One Printer

Hey! I have seen MANY questions about this printer having this problem.

Mine has been broken for so many months - I got used to it and considered it “normal”. It is NOT normal!

None of the suggestions on here or any HP website ever helped me. So I tried just searching online in general. I didn’t get a specific answer that solved it - but I got some ideas…

EVERY HP ANSWER THAT ENDS WITH YOU BUYING A NEW PRINTER? IS A LIE!

All you need is a pair of pliers (or something similar), maybe a flathead screwdriver- but not necessary, and the stronger your hands are, the better.

How I fixed this problem, that according to HP can only be fixed by giving them more money, for free - in 5 minutes:

#1) Pull the extender tray out as much as possible using small pliers (takes a few tries)

#2) Can be helpful to use flathead to hold it out in place (since it wants to snap back - and if you get it out far enough there is a deep, flat line where it fits perfectly)

#3) This allows you to reposition the pliers as far/deep as possible - and just PULL as hard as you can!

#4) Using the flathead and/or pliers again, hold it in place (it will really feel like it’s going to snap back into the printer now-) make sure enough of the extender is exposed, and then I used my hands since they’re quite strong (but a tool would certainly work) and pull as hard as you possibly can!

#5) ITS FIXED!

The thing to remember, is your printer is already “broken” - right? So all your instincts will tell you to stop because you’re going to break the thing. And for the record: I 100% cannot promise you won’t break the whole printer! But if it’s already broken enough to buy a new one…what exactly do you have to lose? So ignore your instincts. I fixed mine on my first try!

(and FYI I’m a petite woman, this isn’t some muscle man thing!) - it does help if you’re mad though lol

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

Excellent!

As you say, if the printer is broken to the extent that you are considering a replacement, it is time to get creative.

True - pulling on the mechanism can break it - so "do this at your own risk".

Thanks for posting your story of success.  💐
