HP ENVY 4520 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

HP Envy 4520 jams when I use photo paper. The paper is 140gsm and the printer is supposed to handle 280gsm. It screeches loudly and jams every time. Any ideas?

Hi @Annoyed031,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds frustrating to deal with printer jams, especially when you're trying to print on photo paper. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue with your HP Envy 4520:

A) Perform a power drain.

1) Take out the cartridges

2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.

3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.

4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not into a surge protector.

5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.

Remove the cartridges > Unplug the power cord > Wait for 30 seconds > Plug the power cord back in > Insert the cartridges

B) Kindly refer to the steps on this link to update the printer firmware and let me know if that resolves the issue.

C) Refer to the below steps to further troubleshoot.

Check Paper Type and Size: Make sure the photo paper is compatible with your printer. Double-check the settings in the printer's software to ensure the correct paper type is selected.

Inspect the Paper Path: Look for any obstructions or debris in the paper path. Sometimes small bits of paper or dust can cause jams.

Load Paper Properly: Ensure you’re loading the photo paper correctly. The glossy side should usually be facing down, and the paper stack should not be too high in the tray.

Use Fewer Sheets: If you’re loading a full tray, try reducing the number of sheets. This can help if the printer is struggling to pull the paper through.

Check Rollers: Inspect the rollers for any dirt or wear. Cleaning them gently with a lint-free cloth can improve paper feeding.

D) If the issue still persists, refer to the steps on this link to restore factory defaults and let me know if that resolves the issue.

Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day
