I have a message on my status screen for my HP Envy Photo 7858 printer.  No effort by me has resulted in updating the printer status, from "paper jam" to "ready to print.

Can you please advise me regarding troubleshooting to return the printer to a "ready to print" status?

Hi @Andre_Stepter ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP Envy Photo 7858 printer displaying a "paper jam" message but you've already checked for and removed any paper, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

1. Turn off the Printer

  • Power off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Leave it unplugged for about 10 minutes to reset any internal sensors.

2. Check for Hidden Paper Jams

  • Open the printer’s access doors (front and rear).
  • Carefully check for any stuck paper, especially in hard-to-see areas like the rollers or inside the paper tray.
  • Gently pull out any visible paper. Be careful not to tear the paper, as it could leave small pieces behind that might be harder to remove.

3. Clear the Paper Path

  • With the printer powered off, carefully inspect the paper path for small pieces of torn paper or debris that might be blocking the rollers.

4. Check the Paper Tray

  • Remove all the paper from the paper tray and check for any paper stuck inside.
  • Reload the paper tray, ensuring that it is aligned properly and not overfilled.

5. Check the Rear Access Panel

  • Open the rear access panel (usually located at the back of the printer).
  • Look for any jammed paper and remove it gently.

6. Reset the Printer

  • After checking for jams and ensuring everything is clear, plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  • Sometimes, a reset is needed to clear the error message. To reset:
    1. Hold the power button for about 5 seconds to perform a reset.
    2. Wait for the printer to restart and check if the error clears.

7. Check Printer Software

  • On your computer, open the HP Smart app or go to the Devices and Printers section in the Control Panel.
  • Check for any issues or updates related to your printer.

8. Run a Printer Diagnostic

  • HP has diagnostic tools that can help identify issues with your printer. You can run these tools via the HP Smart app or by visiting the HP Support website for additional troubleshooting steps.

9. Printer Maintenance

  • If the paper jam message persists despite these steps, try performing a printer cleaning or maintenance cycle through the printer’s settings or via the HP Smart app.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
