I have an older HP Laserjet Pro MFP M227FDW. It has started making a 'gr-gr-gr' sound (3 'gr's) as the ADF tries to pick up the document, then it says misfeed. I've tried to look at the gears and the rollers but I'm not sure what I'm looking for. Any thoughts?

Rollers may be dirty or worn. I suggest you try cleaning them with a lint free cloth dampened with water and then dry them.

Thank you.  I have now done this but it hasn't changed anything. Do you have any other suggestions?

When the feed starts, do you see the pickup rollers drop down to grab the paper? If not you could have an issue with either the pickup roller assembly or the drive for the ADF. Open the ADF lid and on the right side of the part that opens where should be a gear. Try turning the gear in both directions and observe what happens to the pickup roller. One direction should result in the roller dropping down and turning the other direction should lift the roller. If that works then the problem is likely in the gear train of the ADF and not usually a simple fix.

When I turn the gear wheel in either direction, nothing drops down or up. The roller rolls only one way (the way it is supposed to in order to feed the paper).  Is there a way I can I fix this or is it a parts issue?

Looking at the picture of the top cover assembly I am not sure that the rollers on this model actually drop down. What is the condition of the rollers? Do they have little fingerprint like ridges on them? If not, you may want to try replacing the top cover as your description sounds like worn rollers that are not making contact properly. Part number is RM2-1180-000CN

Thank you. The rollers do have ridges on them and they do not appear worn. They are still quite grippy so I am unsure why it refuses to pick. It sounds mechanical though, not like a roller mispick. I will replace the top cover as you advise and will see what happens. Thank you so much for your patience and advice.
