I need help and advice.
My laser jet pro MFP M28 most always has a feed error.
of course HP Smart says ‘printer jam’. IT IS NOT A JAM,
The printer will not feed paper from the tray. I have removed cartridge, NO PAPER INSIDE TO BE FOUND!
I have removed the cartridge & blown everywhere I can find to blow & no paper bits or anything else comes out or flutters.
I have tried with 1 sheet in the tray, 5 sheets! 10 sheets, up to 20 sheets.

Hi @billlyte,
I understand you are facing an issue with your HP MFP LASERJET PRO M28-M31 WILL NOT FEED the PAPER. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.
Let's perform a power drain:
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Remove the USB cable, if present.
- Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
- Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
- Turn on the printer and wait till the warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle

Thanks for all the inormation.
I have been through that procedure SEVERAL times, in fact I found it doing a web search last year. It does not help!
Ocassionally it will print without a problem, then the next print job it won't feed the paper.
THere is no updated firmware for my printer. I check about every 6 months.
I iwll try cleaning the rolors AGAIN, then if that doesn't help, BACK TO MANUAL FEEDING, while I look for another printer brand(Brother, Epson, ETC.
Again thanks

When you send a print job and it tries to print, can you see the pickup roller rotating? Is it possible that you have printed enough pages to wear the roller down? Are you certain that the tray lifts properly so that the paper is in contact with the pickup roller?

Thanks for the response!
When I submit a print job(usb or Wi-Fi), the unit wants to move paper. But all it does is do a sort of shuddering thing and the paper in the tray moves just a bit, so the rollers are rotating. Then the error light comes on.
if I shut it off and back on, it has left a scattering of toner at the lead edge of the paper.
As stated in other post(s) it does do its job occasionally. But mostly I get it tries to pickup a sheet but fails.
So I end up hand feeding.
Getting very frustrating!!
we basically only use the printer during tax season, and occasional odd jobs. I doubt it has had more than 200 - 250 sheets go through it.
there is on,y one tray position, FLAT. It when I put paper in there is a ‘grab’ as the stack comes in contact with something and is contacting the pickup rollers.
PS, I do clean the rollers couple times a year(or more)

How far into the printer is the paper moving? I have never worked on this exact model but most that use this kind of feed have a lifter that pushes the paper up when it goes to print so it can feed a page. I have seen many instances when an item like a paper clip gets caught inside and stops the tray from lifting properly.
