HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e Wide Format All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Like those who wrote back in 2017, 2019, etc. I am having a problem printing on 4x6 photo paper. It says that a paper jam has occurred. I look and there is no paper jam. And the paper is properly loaded in the top tray facing down with the measurement of the tray set to 4x6. I have gone so far as to specifically select photo printing pre-defined settings by the manufacturer. Same thing occurs. I plan to print off quite a few pictures of a recent trip but need to resolve this first. Has anyone found a solution besides ditching this printer and going with another brand or model?

Hi @LivUrTruth,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e is indicating a paper jam when trying to print on 4x6 photo paper, here are several troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue:

1. Check Paper Path

  • Open All Access Points: Make sure to check all areas where paper passes through, including the input and output trays, rear access door, and inside the printer.
  • Remove Any Debris: Look for any small pieces of paper, dust, or other debris that may be causing the sensors to trigger a jam error.

2. Verify Paper Loading

  • Load Correctly: Ensure that the 4x6 photo paper is loaded correctly in the tray:
    • Place the paper in the top tray with the glossy side facing down.
    • Make sure the paper guides are snug against the paper to prevent shifting.

3. Paper Size Settings

  • Adjust Settings: Make sure that both the printer settings and your print job settings are configured for 4x6 paper:
    • In the printer settings, select 4x6 as the paper size.
    • In the print dialog box on your computer, ensure that the paper size is set to 4x6.

4. Update Printer Firmware

  • Make sure your printer has the latest firmware:
    • Use the HP Smart app or go to the HP website to check for any available updates.

5. Run Printer Diagnostics

  • Some HP printers have built-in diagnostics that can help identify issues:
    • Access the printer's settings menu and look for any diagnostics tools to run.

6. Reset Printer Settings

  • You may want to reset the printer’s settings to factory defaults:
    1. On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance.
    2. Select Restore Factory Defaults.

7. Check for Sensor Issues

  • Sometimes, the paper sensors can be obstructed or malfunctioning:
    • If you're comfortable, you can check for any obstructions around the sensors or clean them gently with a soft cloth.

8. Try Different Paper

  • Sometimes, the printer may be sensitive to specific brands or types of paper:
    • Test with a different brand of 4x6 photo paper to see if the issue persists.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
