Our printer shows error E4. But there's no failed paper inside. Before the printer worked well. Then we didn't use it for a few days, but it was been ON all these days. During this time there was electricity surges. Now it shows this error and doesn't work. How to fix it?

Hi @Skyhotel,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Error E4 on HP Smart Tank printers typically indicates a paper jam or a sensor issue. Even if you don't see any paper jammed inside, there could be a small piece of paper or debris triggering the sensor. Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue.
Turn Off and On:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for a minute or two.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
Check for Paper Jams:
- Open all the access doors and trays and check for any visible paper jams. Even small pieces of torn paper can cause issues.
Clear Debris:
- Use a flashlight to carefully inspect the inside of the printer for any debris, small pieces of paper, or foreign objects.
- If you find anything, use tweezers or carefully remove it.
Paper Path Check:
- Make sure there is no obstruction in the paper path. Ensure that the paper is properly loaded in the input tray.
Reset the Printer:
- Some printers have a reset button or sequence. Check your printer's manual for instructions on how to perform a reset.
Update Firmware:
- Check if there's a firmware update available for your printer on the HP website. Updating the firmware can sometimes resolve software-related issues.
Check Sensors:
- Inspect the sensors in the paper path to ensure they are not blocked or damaged. Refer to your printer's manual for guidance on sensor locations.
Power Surge Protection:
- Since you mentioned power surges, it's essential to use a surge protector for your printer to prevent electrical damage. If you haven't been using one, consider using it in the future.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
