HP smart Tank 615 shows a scanner problem. message reads as "restart the printer, if the problem is not fixed the the scanner component is broken and cannot be used to copy and scan." Is there a way to fix this problem without replacing the scanner component?

Hi @DPKWDB,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the error message you're seeing on both the HP Smart Tank 515 and 615 models suggests that there might be a hardware issue with the scanner component. However, before assuming it's a hardware failure, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try that might resolve the issue:

1. Power Cycle the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset internal components and clear any temporary glitches.

2. Update Printer Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Ensure your printer’s firmware is up-to-date. Sometimes, firmware updates can fix bugs or issues that affect the scanner's functionality.
  • You can check for updates via the HP Smart app or by visiting the HP support website.

3. Check for Scanner Blockages:

  • Open the scanner lid and check for any obstructions, such as paper jams or small objects that could be preventing the scanner from moving properly.
  • Clean the scanner glass and the white backing on the scanner lid with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water. Make sure to remove any dust or debris.

4. Reset the Printer:

  • Perform a full reset on the printer:
    • Turn on the printer if it's not already on.
    • Disconnect the power cord from the printer while it’s on.
    • Unplug the power cord from the power source.
    • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
    • Plug the power cord back into the outlet and the printer.
    • Turn the printer back on.

5. Test from Another Device or Application:

  • If you are using a computer or mobile device to scan, try using a different device to see if the problem persists.
  • Alternatively, try scanning using a different application, such as the Windows Fax and Scan or Apple's Preview.

6. Reset Scanner Settings:

  • If the printer has a control panel with a menu, navigate to the settings and look for an option to reset the scanner settings to default.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
