I've had my HP Laser Jet 1012 for over 20 years, and for abut 9 months now it has been jamming by picking up a second piece of paper. I've cleaned the paper pick-up roller and it helped a little , by it's stared again. It owes me nothing but I really don't want to buy a new one as the cost per pager is 3 to 5 times what it costs me know. Is it worth getting it serviced or am I putting good money after bad?

If it is picking multiple pages that usually indicates that the separation pad is worn. Normally when servicing the pickup roller and the separation pad are replaced at the same time as they work together. It is also possible that the pickup solenoid is sticking and allowing multiple pages to be picked. If the pages feed together perfectly then it is likely the pad. If one pad feeds part way and then the next feeds that is usually the solenoid. There are a plethora of videos on YouTube on how to fix the solenoid issue and based on the age of your machine, that is very likely in my opinion.
