HP4130, deskjet plus, paper does not always feed through when printing, it frequently says out of paper when it isn't.  Sometimes I think the feeding mechanism is slipping as it makes what I would call a crunching sound.  Sometimes I also think the ink cartridge tracking sticks.  I've had the printer approx 4 years.

Hi @HumptysHouse ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP DeskJet Plus 4130 is experiencing a few different issues. Here’s a step-by-step approach to troubleshooting and potentially fixing these problems:

Check for Paper Jams:

  • Ensure there are no small pieces of paper stuck inside the printer. Open all the paper trays and the access areas to see if you can spot any obstructions.

Inspect the Paper Feed Rollers:

  • The crunching sound you described might indicate that the paper feed rollers are dirty or worn out. Gently clean the rollers using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water. Rotate the rollers manually while cleaning. If they appear worn or damaged, you might need to replace them.

Adjust Paper Settings:

  • Make sure the paper guides in the tray are adjusted correctly to fit the paper size you’re using. Paper that is not aligned properly can lead to feed issues.

Use the Correct Paper Type:

  • Ensure that you’re using paper that is recommended for your printer. Certain types of paper, like glossy or textured, may cause feeding issues.

Check the Ink Cartridges:

  • Remove and reinsert the ink cartridges to ensure they are seated correctly. Clean the cartridge contacts and the printhead area with a dry, lint-free cloth to remove any ink buildup.

Update Printer Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Sometimes, updating the printer's firmware can resolve issues. Check the HP website for any available firmware updates for your model.

Reset the Printer:

  • Perform a hard reset on the printer. Turn it off, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 60 seconds, and then plug it back in and turn it on.

Printer Maintenance:

  • Run any built-in maintenance or alignment utilities provided by the printer software. This can help with issues related to paper feed and print quality.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
