Hi @RoMoe ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are trying to reattach the encoder strip in your HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 All-in-One Printer requires careful handling, as the encoder strip is crucial for the printer's carriage position sensing.
Here’s how you can reattach it:
Tools Needed:
- Latex or nitrile gloves (optional, to avoid touching the encoder strip with bare hands)
- Flashlight (optional, for better visibility)
Steps to Reattach the Encoder Strip:
Turn Off the Printer: Ensure the printer is turned off and unplugged from the power source to avoid any accidental damage or electric shock.
Open the Printer: Open the front cover of the printer to access the printhead and carriage area. You might need to move the carriage manually to the center if it’s not accessible.
Locate the Encoder Strip: The encoder strip is a thin, transparent strip with fine lines, running horizontally behind the carriage assembly. Ensure it's not damaged or dirty.
Check the Right Side: Since the strip is already attached to the right side, check that it is securely fastened to the hook or pin on that side. It should be attached to a small notch or hook in the printer frame.
Attach to the Left Side:
- Locate the Hook/Slot: On the left side of the printer, locate the corresponding notch, hook, or slot where the encoder strip should attach. It’s typically at the same height as the right side attachment point.
- Thread the Strip: Carefully thread the encoder strip through any guides or slots. Make sure it is not twisted and is parallel to the carriage path.
- Attach the Strip: Gently pull the strip towards the left side and attach it to the notch or hook. It should be under slight tension but not too tight.
Check Alignment: Ensure the encoder strip runs parallel to the carriage path and is properly aligned. The strip should be straight and not sagging.
Test the Carriage Movement: Manually move the print carriage back and forth to ensure it moves smoothly along the encoder strip without any obstructions.
Close the Printer: Once the encoder strip is securely attached and aligned, close the printer cover.
Power On: Plug in and power on the printer. Run a test print to ensure everything is working correctly.
Additional Tips:
- Clean the Encoder Strip: If the encoder strip is dirty, clean it with a lint-free cloth before reattaching it. Avoid touching the strip with your fingers.
- Consult the Manual: Refer to the printer’s service manual for specific diagrams and instructions if you’re unsure about the attachment points.

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

the left side of the strip usually has a slot in it that the hook goes through. I have seen some cases where this slot gets torn and so the strip will not stay. I have had success using duct tape to reinforce the end and then create a slot in the duct tape so you slip it over the hook.
