HP LaserJet Pro 400 color MFP M475dn

Keep getting the errror "Jam in output bin. Open rear door and clear jam".   I have confirmed that there is no paper jam anywhere. I took fuser out and took a look and everything looks okay including the springs. I do not know where the sensors are. A previous post suggested the flag sensors are to be blamed. If I replace the fuser would that solve this issue?  Or should I replace the paper delivery assembly?

I ended up replacing the fuser and it solved the issue. Hopefully this will help someone else.

Hi @chebaker,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're receiving a "Jam in output bin. Open rear door and clear jam" error and have already checked for paper jams and inspected the fuser, the issue might indeed be related to sensors or components within the printer. Here’s a structured approach to diagnosing and potentially resolving the issue:

**1. Inspect Sensors and Flags

Identify Sensors and Flags:

  • Paper Path Sensors: Located throughout the paper path, these sensors detect the presence of paper and ensure proper paper movement. Common locations include the paper feed area, the fuser area, and the output bin.
  • Flag Sensors: Mechanical sensors with flags that move with paper movement. They can get dirty or misaligned.

Clean Sensors and Flags:

  • Turn Off the Printer: Ensure the printer is powered off and unplugged.
  • Access the Paper Path: Open all access doors to the paper path.
  • Clean the Sensors: Use a soft, lint-free cloth and compressed air to gently clean the sensors and flags. Avoid touching sensors directly.

Check for Misalignment or Damage:

  • Inspect the Flags: Ensure they are not stuck or damaged. They should move freely.
  • Reposition Flags: If they appear misaligned, carefully reposition them to their original place.

**2. Check the Output Bin Area

Inspect the Output Bin:

  • Remove All Paper: Take out any paper from the output bin.
  • Check for Obstructions: Look for any small bits of paper or debris that might be causing the jam error.

Verify the Output Bin Sensor:

  • Locate the Sensor: Check for a sensor in the output bin area (usually at the rear).
  • Ensure Proper Function: Ensure the sensor is clean and properly positioned.

**3. Inspect the Fuser

Fuser Assembly:

  • Reinstall Fuser: Ensure the fuser is correctly installed. Misalignment can cause paper jams.
  • Check for Damage: Inspect the fuser for any signs of wear or damage that could affect paper flow.

Replace if Necessary:

  • Consider Replacement: If the fuser shows signs of wear or damage and cleaning does not resolve the issue, replacing the fuser might be necessary.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
