Hi @Hank1064 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing a jammed ink cartridge carriage, combined with a false paper jam message, which often indicates a mechanical issue inside the printer. Here are steps to resolve the issue:

1. Turn Off the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 1 minute to allow the printer to fully reset.

2. Check the Paper Path Thoroughly

  • Open the printer’s front access panel or paper path door.
  • Remove the paper tray and inspect for tiny scraps of paper or debris, even in hidden corners.
  • Use a flashlight to check the entire paper path, especially under rollers and near the rear access door (if applicable).

3. Manually Move the Cartridge Carriage  HP Printers - Carriage jam or E3 error

  • With the printer still unplugged:
    • Open the ink cartridge access door.
    • Gently try to move the carriage by hand to the center of the printer.
    • If the carriage is stuck, look for obstructions such as jammed paper or foreign objects.

Note: Do not force the carriage, as this may damage the printer.

4. Clean the Carriage Path and Rollers

  • Inspect the carriage path for obstructions or sticky residue.
  • Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water to clean the rollers and carriage path.
  • If the carriage feels sticky or resistant, clean the underside and the rails it slides on.

5. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on while holding the Power button for about 30 seconds.
  • Release the button and let the printer fully restart.

6. Update Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • If the printer starts working again, ensure the firmware is up-to-date using the HP Smart app or HP Support website.

7. Test with the Cartridges Removed

  • Remove all ink cartridges and attempt to move the carriage again.
  • If the carriage moves freely without the cartridges, one of the cartridges may be causing the jam. Inspect for leaks or damage.

8. Reset the Printer

  • Perform a full factory reset:
    • From the printer’s control panel, go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults.
