Hi @Hank1064 ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing a jammed ink cartridge carriage, combined with a false paper jam message, which often indicates a mechanical issue inside the printer. Here are steps to resolve the issue:
1. Turn Off the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for about 1 minute to allow the printer to fully reset.
2. Check the Paper Path Thoroughly
- Open the printer’s front access panel or paper path door.
- Remove the paper tray and inspect for tiny scraps of paper or debris, even in hidden corners.
- Use a flashlight to check the entire paper path, especially under rollers and near the rear access door (if applicable).
3. Manually Move the Cartridge Carriage HP Printers - Carriage jam or E3 error
- With the printer still unplugged:
- Open the ink cartridge access door.
- Gently try to move the carriage by hand to the center of the printer.
- If the carriage is stuck, look for obstructions such as jammed paper or foreign objects.
Note: Do not force the carriage, as this may damage the printer.
4. Clean the Carriage Path and Rollers
- Inspect the carriage path for obstructions or sticky residue.
- Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water to clean the rollers and carriage path.
- If the carriage feels sticky or resistant, clean the underside and the rails it slides on.
5. Perform a Hard Reset
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on while holding the Power button for about 30 seconds.
- Release the button and let the printer fully restart.
6. Update Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer
- If the printer starts working again, ensure the firmware is up-to-date using the HP Smart app or HP Support website.
7. Test with the Cartridges Removed
- Remove all ink cartridges and attempt to move the carriage again.
- If the carriage moves freely without the cartridges, one of the cartridges may be causing the jam. Inspect for leaks or damage.
8. Reset the Printer
- Perform a full factory reset:
- From the printer’s control panel, go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults.
