I have a Mac and use OS 10.15 Catalina.
My HP LaserJet Pro M404dn won’t let me change to Tray 2. All I get is a flashing error triangle red light and the display saids:
--Load Plain Letter (8.5 x 11) in tray 1, or, for 1 sided jobs or, it saids:
--Tray 1, Or, for 1-sided jobs, press “OK” for available paper.
But I can't change to Tray 2.
Why can’t I change the settings to Tray 2? The answer you gave above was of no help, so please be detailed and tell me what I need to do?
Thanks.

What settings do you have on the printer for tray 2. Your print job is looking for 8.5 x11 and if you do not have the paper size settings, on the printer, through the control panel sets to letter size, the printer will stop and prompt for the size the job needs to be inserted in tray 1 (manual tray). Setting tray 2 to any size will also cause this behavior.

Thanks.
Sorry for the late reply. No. I don't think it's set to 8.5 x 11 or maybe it is. One of the difficulties is, I always have a difficult time using the arrow and OK buttons on the display panel to get to the proper settings for anything. Can you direct me to a video or written instructions as to how to use the display buttons, and how to get to the paper setting so I can change it to 8.5 x 11?

If you are connected via network to the printer. Type the IP address of the printer into the address bar of your browser. If you get any warnings about data being stolen, click accept the risk and this will take you to the embedded web server of the printer. From there. I do not have a 404 in my shop right now, this is a screen shot from a different model but hopefully can provide some guidance of what to look for to find the paper tray settings.
