HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 All-in-One Printer

I was dismantling the 8715 paper feeder at the top because I wanted access to the sensor for cleaning (currently stuck with the 'document feeder jam' error code despite there being no paper in sight, I would love any sort of guidance with that, though that's a separate issue)

while taking the pieces apart, this metal rod flew out before I had a chance to see how it was supposed to fit. does anyone know how this rod between my fingers is supposed to fit in with the plastic white cogs? thanks a ton

Hi @respiren,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Reassembling the HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 scanner paper feeder can be tricky, especially if a part like the metal rod has come loose.

Here's a step-by-step guide to help you reposition the metal rod and reassemble the feeder:

Tools Needed:

  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers (optional)
  • Tweezers (optional)

Steps to Reposition the Metal Rod:

Power Off the Printer:

  • Ensure the printer is turned off and unplugged to avoid any electrical hazards.

Locate the Area:

  • Identify the area where the metal rod was originally located. It is likely part of the paper feeder mechanism, which includes the white plastic cogs.

Inspect the Rod and Cogs:

  • Examine the metal rod for any notches or hooks that might indicate how it fits with the cogs.
  • Look for any corresponding slots or holes in the plastic cogs or surrounding areas where the rod could be inserted.

Align the Rod:

  • Position the rod in a way that aligns with the cogs. Often, the rod acts as an axis or a support for the cogs to rotate.
  • Use needle-nose pliers or tweezers to carefully guide the rod into place if it’s difficult to do by hand.

Secure the Rod:

  • Once aligned, gently press the rod into the slots or holes. Ensure it is securely in place but do not force it, as this could damage the components.

Test the Feeder Mechanism:

  • Manually turn the cogs to ensure they rotate freely and the rod stays in place.
  • Check for any obstructions or misalignments.

Reassemble the Feeder:

  • Carefully reassemble any other parts you had to remove, making sure everything is aligned correctly.
  • Reattach any screws or clips that were removed during the disassembly.

Power On and Test:

  • Plug the printer back in and power it on.
  • Test the document feeder by placing a few sheets of paper in it and initiating a scan or copy job to ensure it functions correctly.

Tips:

  • If possible, refer to the service manual for the HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 for detailed diagrams and assembly instructions.
  • Take pictures during disassembly to use as a reference when reassembling.
  • Be patient and gentle to avoid breaking any delicate parts.

Addressing the Document Feeder Jam Error:

  • Clean the Sensor: Use a soft, lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water or isopropyl alcohol to gently clean the sensor.
  • Check for Small Debris: Inspect the feeder mechanism for any tiny bits of paper or other debris that might be causing the jam error.
  • Reset the Printer: Sometimes a simple reset can clear error messages. Unplug the printer, wait for a minute, and then plug it back in.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
