Hi @FranH7,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 is having trouble feeding cardstock, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.

  • Check Cardstock Compatibility: Ensure that the cardstock you are using is compatible with your printer. Cardstock comes in various thicknesses, and some printers may not be able to handle very thick cardstock. Check your printer's manual or specifications to determine the recommended cardstock weight and thickness.
  • Load Cardstock Correctly: Make sure you are loading the cardstock into the paper tray correctly. The cardstock should be placed neatly in the tray and not overloaded. Adjust the paper guides to align with the cardstock size.
  • Clean the Rollers: Over time, the paper feed rollers can accumulate dust and debris, which can affect the feeding process. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Open the printer's access door and carefully clean the rollers with a lint-free cloth and some distilled water. Make sure the rollers are completely dry before reassembling and using the printer.
  • Adjust Paper Settings: In your printer settings or on the printer's control panel, make sure you have selected the correct paper type (cardstock) and paper size. This ensures that the printer uses the appropriate settings for cardstock printing.
  • Print One Sheet at a Time: If the cardstock is particularly thick, try feeding one sheet at a time instead of stacking multiple sheets in the tray. This can help prevent jams and misfeeds.
  • Update Printer Firmware: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer on the HP website. Updating the firmware can sometimes resolve printing issues.
  • Check for Obstructions: Inspect the paper path for any obstructions, such as small pieces of torn paper or foreign objects that may be blocking the cardstock's path.
  • Use a Different Tray: Some printers have a dedicated tray for thicker media like cardstock. Check your printer's manual to see if it has a separate tray for cardstock and use it if available.
  • Try Different Cardstock: If you are still experiencing issues, try using a different brand or type of cardstock. Some cardstock may be better suited for your printer than others.

Remember to always follow safety precautions when working with your printer, such as unplugging it from the power source before performing any maintenance or cleaning tasks.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
