@Liam1950, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
A persistent false 'Paper Jam' error on the HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 — despite no visible jam — is typically caused by one of the following:

Step-by-Step Fix:

Check All Jam Areas (Thoroughly)

Even a tiny piece of paper or smudge can cause the sensor to misfire. Open and inspect:

  • Input tray (remove all paper and reinsert)
  • Output tray
  • Rear access door or rear duplexer
  • ADF (Automatic Document Feeder): Open the top cover and inspect rollers
  • Use a flashlight and gently rotate rollers to check for debris or torn bits

Clean Paper Path and Sensors

False jams often happen due to dirty or blocked paper sensors.

  • Power off printer and unplug it
  • Gently clean rollers and sensor areas using a lint-free cloth and distilled water or isopropyl alcohol
  • Be sure to clean:
  1. Input tray rollers
  2. ADF rollers
  3. Any visible optical paper sensors (small plastic flags or dark components)

Perform a Hard Reset

This resets internal sensors:

  1. Turn the printer on
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the printer (without turning it off)
  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall
  4. Wait 60 seconds
  5. Reconnect the power cord directly to a wall outlet (not through surge protector)
  6. Reconnect to the printer and power it on

Check for ADF Paper Jam Flags

In the ADF unit, there’s a plastic sensor flag that might get stuck or misaligned.

  • Open the ADF cover and look for a black or white plastic lever near the rollers — it should move freely
  • If stuck, gently release and reset it

Update Firmware

Outdated firmware can cause repeated sensor issues.

Go to HP support site → Enter “OfficeJet Pro 7740” → Download and install the latest firmware for Windows 10 (64-bit)
Or check this - Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor

Download from: Official HP Print and Scan Doctor for Windows | Free Download hppsdr.exe

It can identify sensor faults or firmware errors that need resolution

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
