Officejet 4500 Paper jam error and weird sound

Hello,

I recently received an HP OfficeJet 4500 Ethernet. I plugged and can hear some loud knocking in the printer (Can be heard in the video below). After it finish it banging it show a paper jam error. I done alot of searching online but there absolutely no paper stuck anywhere and I make sure to plug the printer directly to the wall. Since I love to repair things I have dissembled most of the printer the only thing that I though could fixed the problem was cleaning the timing strip which didn't make any difference. Ohh and after reassembling everything it seem like there some gear grinding which wasn't there at the beginning. I will disassembled it again for sure but I wanted to know if anyone had any idea of what could the problem be ?

It sounds like a calibration strip is missing, out of position or printer carriage can't read calibration strip and it bangs left-right.

Can you post the photo of the disassembled printer from the front?

I have examined your top photo one more and I can confirm with 99% accuracy you are missing a calibration strip.

The calibration strip is used by the sensor on the cartridge holder to determine the position of carriage holder, without that strip you get banging. It looks you are missing calibration strip holders too, so you would need to get a calibration strip ( few $ on eBay) and holder on the right side ( it's missing too).

Calibration strip is a thin plastic strip located above main printer rod coming from left to right side of the printed and trough cartridge holder.

The red circles show you the holders for a calibration ( encoder) strip, the left one ix fixed, the right one is missing, and the yellow line shows imaginary calibration (encoder) strip ( it goes trough cartridge holder).

Thanks for your reply. Really sorry but the calibration strip isn't missing. I forgot that I took the picture after removing some piece. I am sorry for the inconvenience. The strip seem pretty clean.

Did you install calibration strip trought the sensor on the cartridge holder?

That banging on the left and right side is due to a cartridge holder unable to position itself.

Hello,

Good and bad news seem like when reassembling the printer I didn't pass the strip trough the sensor, I don’t remember if when disassembling it for the first time it was at the correct position. Anyway now the banging is gone but the cartridge holder get stuck in the left side and I can hear some gear grinding coming from the print head cleaner. I also cleaned the calibration strip and the sensor with Isopropyl alcohol.

Hi,

I have done a full disassembly of the printer and cleaned the calibration strip around the gear and the sensor which was the cause of the problem. Now the printer seem to work only need ink to test it out except that there still one problem and it the mechanism for cleaning the print head the gear are skipping can be seen in the video bellow. I am pretty that I havent installed it properly. Does it need to be in a specific position for it to work ? Thanks for the help as usual.
