@jacksbumpers, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
Turn Off and Unplug the Printer
- Safety First: Always start by turning off the printer and unplugging it from the power source. This helps avoid any risk of injury or damage while you’re troubleshooting.
Inspect for Paper Jams
- Look inside the printer and gently pull out any stuck paper. Make sure there’s no torn paper left inside, as this can cause future jams.
- Ensure there are no small pieces of paper or debris that could be obstructing the path.
Check the Paper Feed Mechanism
- Check the feed rollers for dirt, paper dust, or wear. Dirty or worn-out rollers may cause paper to feed unevenly or jam during the cycle.
- You can clean the rollers with a soft cloth lightly moistened with water or isopropyl alcohol. Avoid harsh chemicals that may damage the rollers.
- If the rollers appear damaged, you may need to replace them.
- Ensure the paper trays are properly aligned, and the paper stack is not too high. The paper should be stacked neatly without any bends.
Examine the Paper
- Make sure the paper you're using is the correct type and size for your printer. Avoid using old, damp, or wrinkled paper.
- When placing paper in the tray, ensure that it's aligned properly. Do not overfill the tray, as this can cause issues with feeding.
Inspect the Output Tray and Path
- A jam in the output bin could be caused by too much paper or improper paper alignment in the tray. Ensure the output bin is not blocked and there’s enough space for the paper to exit the printer fully.
- Visually inspect the paper path for any obstructions or items that could impede the paper from passing through, especially near the exit point where the paper is curling up.
Run a Printer Self-Test
- After you’ve checked everything, run the printer’s built-in self-test or cleaning cycle (without paper) to see if it jams again.
- Check for any error codes on the display and consult your printer’s manual for troubleshooting steps related to the error codes.
Perform a Printer Reset
- Resetting your printer can sometimes clear out any underlying issues.
- Turn off the printer and unplug it for about 10-15 minutes. Then plug it back in and turn it on.
Check for Firmware/Software Issues
- Visit HP's website and check for any available firmware updates for your printer model. Outdated firmware can sometimes cause issues during printing or cleaning cycles.
- Ensure that the printer drivers are correctly installed and up to date on your computer. Outdated drivers can sometimes lead to communication issues that may cause jams.
Check for Hardware Issues
- If the paper sensors (which detect the presence and movement of paper) are malfunctioning, they could misinterpret the paper’s position and cause it to jam.
- If the feed motor or gears are not working correctly, they could cause uneven paper feeding, resulting in jams.
Try a Different Cleaning Cycle
- Sometimes the issue only occurs during the cleaning cycle. Try printing a test page or document to see if the printer still jams under normal operation.
I hope these steps help resolve the issue
