Hi @trwood50,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your printer displays a "paper jam" error despite no paper being present in the printer, it could be due to several issues such as sensors malfunctioning, small bits of paper being lodged inside, or paper rollers being stuck. Here’s a systematic approach to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Power Off and Unplug the Printer

  • Press the power button to turn off the printer.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the electrical outlet to ensure safety.

2. Check for Paper in the Printer

  • Open the front access door and any other panels that allow access to the paper path.
  • Take out the paper tray and check for any jammed paper or debris.
  • Look inside the printer for any small bits of paper or foreign objects. Paper pieces can sometimes be lodged in areas that are not immediately visible.

3. Inspect and Clean the Paper Path

  • Inspect the paper rollers for any obstructions or paper bits. Gently rotate the rollers by hand to check if they move freely.
  • Use a soft, lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water or a printer cleaning solution to clean the rollers. Allow the rollers to dry completely before proceeding.

4. Examine the Paper Sensors

  • Paper sensors are typically small and located in the paper path. They may be optical sensors or mechanical switches.
  • Gently clean the sensors with a soft, dry cloth. Be careful not to use any liquid on the sensors directly.

5. Perform a Printer Reset

  • With the printer still unplugged, hold the power button for 15-30 seconds to reset the printer’s internal circuits.
  • Plug the power cord back in and turn the printer on.

6. Check for Error Codes or Messages

  • Observe any error codes or specific messages on the printer’s display. These codes can provide additional clues about the issue.
  • Refer to the printer’s user manual for troubleshooting steps related to specific error codes or messages.

7. Test the Printer:

  • Try printing a test page to see if the error persists.
  • If the error message disappears, ensure that the printer correctly handles paper and that no further issues are apparent.

8. Update Printer Firmware

  • Visit the HP Support website and search for your printer model.
  • Download and install any available firmware updates to ensure your printer is running the latest software.

By carefully following these steps, you should be able to identify and resolve the cause of the paper jam error. If you have any more questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask!

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
