Hi @PNB3,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP Smart Tank 790 printer is showing a “Clean the paper jam” error, but there’s no visible paper stuck. Sorry to hear about the trouble. Please follow these steps to resolve the issue:
Step 1: Check All Possible Jam Locations
Paper jams can occur in hidden areas. Check and clear these:
- Input Tray Area
- Remove the input tray.
- Look inside and gently pull out any visible paper or debris.
- Inside the Printer
- Open the ink access door.
- Check around the printhead carriage and remove any scraps.
- Rear of the Printer
- Open the rear access door or duplexer.
- Remove any jammed paper or debris.
- Automatic Document Feeder (ADF)
- Lift the ADF cover.
- Remove any paper or dust inside.
Step 2: Clean the Paper Pick Rollers
Dust buildup can cause false jam errors.
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Remove the input and output trays.
- Use a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water.
- Gently clean the grey paper pick rollers inside the tray area.
- Let dry for 10–15 minutes before turning the printer back on.
Step 3: Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall and the printer.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in and turn on the printer.
I hope this helps.
Take care, and have an amazing day!
