HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Display screen alternates between "paper jam" and "printer failure" after each reset. No jam detected.

Message boards do not provide instructions on determining whether the carriage is stuck, or locked.

What is the expected service life for a lightly used 6978 home printer? Is there a way to access total number of pages printed and pages scanned?

@rapidrick, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.

To check the number of pages printed, print a Printer Status Report

  1. From the home screen on the printer control panel, swipe down to open the Dashboard, and then touch the Setup icon .

  2. Swipe up on the display, and then touch Reports.

  3. Swipe up on the display, and then touch Printer Status Report.

Perform the steps mentioned in this document - 'Printer Failure' Error

Check for any jams inside the printer and make sure the print carriage is moving freely.

Refer to - Paper Jam Error

If the issue persists, please reach out to the HP Technical Support team in your region regarding the service/replacement options for your printer.
