HP ENVY Photo 7858 All-in-One Printer

Cannot get rid of the 'paper jam' error message on my HP Envy 7858 printer.  I have checked the interior of the printer multiple times, unplugged the device, watched tutorials, cleaned the rollers, but cannot get past this message.  Additionally, I need to link it to a new wi-fi network, but cannot access the screen to do so because of the paper jam message.  Need help. Any ideas ?

Hi @KPM698,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Envy 7858 printer is stuck on a "paper jam" error despite there being no visible jam. This issue can sometimes be resolved by addressing sensors or internal memory issues. Here's a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot this problem.

Check the Paper Path Thoroughly

  • Double-check the entire paper path, including:
    • Input and output trays.
    • Inside the printer (remove any accessible panels or compartments).
    • Rear door or duplexer (if applicable).
    • Use a flashlight to look for tiny scraps of paper, dust, or debris.

Inspect and Clean the Rollers

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water to clean the paper feed rollers.
  • Rotate the rollers gently and ensure they're free of dirt or paper residue.

Reset the Printer

  • Unplug the printer while it is turned on.
  • Wait for 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and power it on. This can sometimes clear false error messages.

Check the Sensors

  • The paper jam sensor may be dirty or misaligned.
  • Use compressed air to gently blow out any dust or debris around the sensors.
  • If accessible, carefully clean the sensor area with a soft, dry cloth.

Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn the printer on, then unplug it from the power source.
  • Disconnect any other cables.
  • Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Bypass the Error to Access the Screen

  • If the error persists, try initiating a firmware reset using a key combination:
    • Press and hold the Cancel button (if available) and tap the Power button to access reset options.
    • Follow any on-screen instructions.

Link the Printer to a New Wi-Fi Network

If you manage to clear the paper jam error:

  • Navigate to Setup > Network Settings on the printer screen.
  • Choose Wireless Setup Wizard and connect to the new Wi-Fi network.
  • Alternatively, use the HP Smart App on your computer or mobile device to connect the printer to Wi-Fi.

Update Printer Firmware

If the printer starts working again, update its firmware via the HP Smart App or from the HP website to prevent similar issues in the future.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

So, like several others on this site, I continue to get a paper jam error message on my HP 7858 when there is no paper jam.  Has been happening over the past several months.  Have checked paper path multiple times; cleaned the rollers as instructed, powered down and back on; made sure the firm ware was updated; watched tutorials,  etc.  and either resolution for a few days only and/no resolution.    INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATING!

My last request is you talk about cleaning the sensors.  Happy to try that.  WHERE THE HECK ARE THEY,  HOW ARE THEY ACCESSED and HOW SHOULD THEY BE CLEANED???    C'mon HP!  If you're going to give guidance like that, give complete guidance!

Otherwise, this printer has seen it's last days...
