The printer worked fine a couple of days ago then the paper pick up in the main paper tray started jamming. I tried to turn the unit off by taking the power cord out of the wall receptacle. Let it stand for about five minutes and then turned it back on. Same issue. Tried loading differs paper styles to see if that was the issue but got the same result, paper jamming. Looked on line and saw that there is a pickup solenoid in the unit. Could this be the problem? Also the paper feeder assembly also stopped working. Not sure what caused that to happen. Any help would be greatly appreciated as this printer has been my workhorse for quite a while and I really hate to have to replace it. Thanks.

Hi @BobC123,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you've already done some troubleshooting steps, which is great. Since the issue persists even after trying different types of paper, it's possible that there may be a mechanical problem with the pickup mechanism or another component within the printer.
Here are a few additional steps you can try.
- Check for any obstructions: Sometimes, small pieces of paper or debris can get stuck inside the printer and cause jams. Open up the printer and carefully inspect the paper path, especially around the pickup rollers and the paper feeder assembly, to see if there's anything blocking the path of the paper.
- Clean the pickup rollers: Over time, the pickup rollers can accumulate dust and debris, which can affect their ability to pick up paper properly. Use a soft, lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water or isopropyl alcohol to clean the rollers. Be sure to let them dry completely before reinstalling them.
- Inspect the pickup rollers: Check the condition of the pickup rollers to see if they are worn out or damaged. If they appear to be in poor condition, they may need to be replaced. Replacement pickup rollers can usually be purchased online or from a printer repair shop.
- Check the pickup solenoid: If you suspect that the pickup solenoid may be the issue, you can try testing it to see if it's functioning properly. You may need to refer to the printer's service manual for guidance on how to do this.
- Reset the printer: Sometimes, performing a factory reset on the printer can help resolve issues like this. Refer to the printer's user manual or HP's support website for instructions on how to perform a factory reset.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Alden,
Thanks for your help on the paper jamming issue. I spent some time today opening up the printer and discovered that a small paper clip somehow got inside the printer just behind the pickup roller. Once removed the paper jamming issues were resolved. Thanks for your help on that issue.
The second issue that I wrote about was the automatic document feeder. It stopped working a while ago. It seems that it will not recognize when any document is inserted into the feeder. Not sure if the pickup sensor is working or not. Any help on trying to troubleshoot this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again.

Hi @BobC123,
Thank you for your response,
If the automatic document feeder (ADF) of your HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf Multifunction Printer has stopped working and doesn't recognize when documents are inserted, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try.
- Clean the ADF: Dust and debris can accumulate over time, obstructing sensors and preventing proper document feeding. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean the rollers and sensors inside the ADF carefully.
- Check for paper jams: Even small bits of paper stuck in the ADF can cause issues. Open the ADF cover and carefully inspect for any paper shreds or debris that might be obstructing the sensors or rollers.
- Inspect the ADF rollers: Make sure that the rollers, which pull the paper through the ADF, are clean and not worn out. If they appear dirty or damaged, consider cleaning or replacing them.
- Reset the printer: Sometimes, a simple power cycle can resolve minor issues. Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a few minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on again.
- Check ADF settings: Ensure that the ADF settings are configured correctly on the printer's control panel or through the printer driver on your computer. Make sure that the ADF is enabled and set to the correct paper size and type.
- Update firmware and drivers: Outdated firmware or printer drivers can sometimes cause issues with printer functionality. Check the HP website for any available updates and install them accordingly.
- Perform a factory reset: If none of the above steps resolve the issue, you can try performing a factory reset on the printer. Refer to the printer's user manual for instructions on how to do this, as the process can vary depending on the printer model.
If after trying these steps the ADF still doesn't work, it's possible that there may be a hardware issue with the pickup sensor or another component of the ADF.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
