Hi @Tlynn2,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If the paper tray on your HP printer won’t stay up and the printer isn’t recognizing that paper is loaded, there are several potential issues and corresponding solutions you can try:

1. Check Paper Tray Installation:

  • Proper Alignment: Ensure the paper tray is properly aligned and fully inserted into the printer. It should click into place and be level with the printer.
  • Tray Locks: Some printers have small levers or locks to secure the tray. Make sure these are engaged if applicable.

2. Inspect the Paper Tray:

  • Damage: Check the paper tray for any visible damage or deformities. A damaged tray might not fit correctly or align properly.
  • Paper Guides: Ensure that the paper guides within the tray are adjusted correctly to fit the paper size you’re using.

3. Check for Paper Jams or Obstructions:

  • Paper Path: Open all accessible panels and check for any paper jams or obstructions in the paper path. Clear any stuck paper or debris.
  • Tray Sensor: Some printers have sensors that detect the presence of paper. Make sure these sensors are clean and unobstructed.

4. Ensure Correct Paper Loading:

  • Paper Type and Size: Confirm that the paper is loaded correctly in the tray and that it matches the paper size settings on the printer.
  • Paper Quality: Use high-quality, undamaged paper. Avoid using wrinkled or curled paper, as it can cause feeding issues.

5. Clean the Paper Tray and Rollers:

  • Rollers: Dust and debris on the paper feed rollers can cause paper feed issues. Gently clean the rollers with a soft, dry cloth. If they are very dirty, use a slightly dampened cloth (with water) and allow them to dry completely before testing.
  • Tray Interior: Clean the inside of the paper tray to ensure there is no debris that could interfere with paper feeding.

6. Check Printer Settings:

  • Paper Size Settings: Make sure that the paper size settings in the printer’s control panel or software match the size of the paper loaded in the tray.
  • Paper Source Settings: Verify that the paper tray you’re using is selected as the paper source in the print settings on your computer.

7. Update Printer Firmware and Drivers:

  • Firmware Update: Check the HP support website for any available firmware updates for your printer model. Installing the latest firmware can resolve various issues.
  • Driver Update: Download and install the latest printer drivers from the HP support website.

8. Perform a Printer Reset:

  • Power Cycle: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and power it on.
  • Factory Reset: If a power cycle doesn’t resolve the issue, you might consider performing a factory reset. Refer to your printer’s manual or HP support website for instructions.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
