Hi @paulster1 ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP ENVY 5540 All-In-One Printer indicates a paper jam when there is none, it can be frustrating. This issue can be caused by several factors, including sensor malfunctions, paper path obstructions, or firmware glitches. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:
1. Check for Actual Paper Jams
- Remove all paper: Take out all the paper from the input and output trays.
- Open the printer: Access the paper path from both the front and the back of the printer, including the paper tray, rear access door, and any other accessible areas.
- Inspect for small pieces: Look for any small bits of paper or other debris that might be stuck in the rollers or other parts of the paper path.
2. Clean the Paper Rollers
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Locate the rollers: These are usually inside the paper tray and at the rear of the printer.
- Clean with a lint-free cloth: Slightly dampen the cloth with water and gently clean the rollers. Avoid using too much water.
3. Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for a minute before plugging it back in.
- Turn it back on and try printing again.
4. Check the Paper Settings
- Paper size and type: Ensure that the paper size and type settings in the printer driver match the actual paper loaded in the tray.
- Load paper correctly: Make sure the paper is loaded properly in the tray, not overfilled, and the guides are correctly positioned.
5. Update Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Check for updates: Visit the HP support website to check for any available firmware updates for your printer.
- Install updates: Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware updates.
6. Inspect the Paper Path Sensors
- Sensor malfunction: Sometimes, the sensors that detect paper jams can become misaligned or dirty.
- Clean sensors: Use a can of compressed air to gently blow out any dust or debris around the sensors.
7. Perform a Hard Reset
- Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord.
- Press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer.
