I have paper in the main tray to print but the printer keeps sending me a message that the printer is out of paper but it’s not. I keep pushing paper up in the tray so the printer will recognize that paper is in it.

@PostalIris, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're receiving an "Out of Paper" error even though there's paper loaded in the main tray. This is a common issue and can usually be resolved with a few simple steps. Let's walk through them:

Check Paper Condition and Loading

  • Make sure the paper is not curled, wrinkled, or damp.
  • Fan the stack of paper to prevent sheets from sticking together.
  • Load the paper correctly into the tray and ensure it’s aligned with the paper width guides.
  • Avoid overfilling the tray.

Clean the Paper Feed Rollers

Dust or debris on the rollers can prevent the printer from picking up paper.

Reset the Printer

Sometimes a simple reset can clear the error.

  • With the printer on, disconnect the power cord from the back.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn the printer on.

Update Printer Firmware

Outdated firmware can cause miscommunication between the printer and tray sensors.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
