Hi @SJprint1957

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

If your HP ENVY 4520 keeps showing a paper jam error even after clearing it, the issue may be caused by a hidden obstruction, misaligned sensor, or residual paper fragments deep inside the mechanism.

Let’s walk through how to fully reset and inspect the printer to clear the false jam.

Step-by-step actions to resolve persistent paper jam error

Power off and unplug the printer

  • Disconnect the power cord and USB cable
  • Wait at least 60 seconds to allow internal sensors to reset

Inspect all access points thoroughly

  • Open the ink cartridge access door and gently move the carriage left and right
  • Remove the rear access door and inspect the rollers and paper path
  • Use a flashlight to check for tiny scraps of paper, dust, or foreign objects—even small fragments can trigger a jam alert

Clean the rollers

  • Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water
  • Wipe the rollers inside the rear access area and input tray
  • Let everything dry completely before closing the printer

Reload paper properly

  • Fan the stack of paper and reload 10–15 sheets of clean, dry paper
  • Ensure the paper guides are snug but not tight
  • Avoid overfilling the tray

Reset the printer

  • Plug the printer back in and power it on
  • Wait for it to initialize fully before sending a print job

Run HP’s Diagnose & Fix tool

If the error persists after these steps, the jam sensor may be misaligned or the paper feed mechanism may need service. Let me know if you'd like help verifying part numbers or checking alternate print paths.

You’ve done everything right by inspecting and restarting, and we’ll make sure your printer feeds smoothly again.
