My printer was left unused for a little while due to a paper jam. After I finally fixed the paper jam, it claimed the paper tray is open when it isn't. I've tried everything I've seen on the HP website and this support community to fix it, from taking the tray completely out, inspecting for stuck paper, and reinserting it, to messing with the settings, to doing a reset to factory settings. It still says the paper tray is open and won't let me do anything with the printer until it's closed. Of course this happens after the warranty is expired 🙄. Is there any way at all to fix this myself?

Hi @LTRP,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like a frustrating issue. Since you’ve already tried many troubleshooting steps, here are a few more things you might try.
- Inspect the Tray Sensor: The problem might be with the paper tray sensor, which could be stuck or malfunctioning. Look inside the printer where the tray inserts and check for any obstructions or debris. The sensor is usually a small mechanical switch or an optical sensor.
- Check for Physical Damage: Ensure there’s no damage to the tray itself or the area where it slides in. Sometimes a small crack or misalignment can cause sensor issues.
- Reset the Printer Again: Try performing a hard reset of the printer. Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 60 seconds, and then plug it back in and power it on.
- Firmware Update: Ensure your printer's firmware is up-to-date. Sometimes, firmware updates can resolve hardware-related issues. You can check for updates through the HP Smart app or the HP website.
- Inspect the Tray Connection: Check if the tray is making proper contact with any internal connections or switches when inserted. Sometimes the issue can be with the connection points rather than the tray itself.
- Manual Tray Adjustment: Sometimes adjusting the tray slightly forward or backward while inserting it can help the sensor detect it correctly. Ensure the tray is seated properly.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
