HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g
Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)

Turned on printer today and it says that the printer head is missing or ?? something and I have tried removing and putting it back in, but no luck.  Tried turning off power and no luck.  Do I need to replace it?  Does printer need repair?

Hi @DB_47,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer is showing a "printhead missing or not working" error message, here are some steps you can try before deciding whether to replace or repair the printer:

Check the Printhead and Cartridges:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Open the printer’s access door to reveal the printhead and ink cartridges.
  • Carefully remove the printhead and the ink cartridges. Inspect them for any visible damage or obstruction.
  • Clean the printhead contacts and the corresponding contacts inside the printer with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water or rubbing alcohol.
  • Reinstall the printhead and ink cartridges, ensuring they are securely in place.

Check for Paper Jams:

  • Inspect the printer for any paper jams or obstructions that might be interfering with the printhead's movement.

Update Printer Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Check for any firmware updates for your printer. Sometimes, updating the firmware can resolve hardware issues.

Reset the Printer:

  • Perform a hard reset of the printer by unplugging it from the power source, waiting for 60 seconds, and then plugging it back in.

Try a Different Printhead:

  • If you have access to a compatible printhead, try installing it to see if the issue persists.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
