I just purchased a HP M607 printer for the primary use of printing custom sized price tag on heavier than normal type of paper.

When i put the tag onto the bypass tray (tray 1) and have my setting as any size, any type, it prints from that tray and prints on the tag but does not fuse well.  When i change the type to a heavier paper to try to get it to fuse better it will not print from tray 1 but pull a letter size paper from tray 2.  What setting do i need to change in the printer to get the tag to print from tray 1 and get the fussing to work better?

Make sure the firmware is the most current version as initially the printers were programmed to block heavy media due feeding concerns. After much customer feedback this was changed recently. You could also go into the paper configuration and change the paper settings of plain paper to match heavier media.

Update the firm ware did not help with the problem.  As long as I keep the tray 1 settings as any size any type the tag will bring out of tray 1 but does not always fuse correctly.  As soon as I can the type to a heavier size it will no longer print from tray 1.  What am I missing?

As I first posted, try editing the paper settings of plain paper. Screen shot below

In the embedded web server go to copy/print>print quality>adjust paper types. Select plain paper, click edit at bottom of page and change print mode to cardstock or other heavy media. Note you can also adjust fuser temperature in this menu.

I have changed the plain paper setting to heavy mode and you showed me to. Told tray 1 to use any size and plain after the change and it well not print from tray 1 only take paper from tray 2.  Anything else I can try?

Any size is likely causing the issue, use the same paper size settings as tray 2.
