My B110a works fine, but when it's idle it sometimes picks up and loads a sheet of paper, it doesn't print anything, it just runs through the printer.

Hi @Geoffairies

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device,It sounds like your HP DeskJet B110a is picking up a sheet of paper when idle but not printing anything. This behavior is usually caused by one of a few potential issues. Here's how you can troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the problem:

1. Printer Memory or Queue Issue.

  • Clear the Print Queue: Check your printer’s print queue on your computer to ensure there are no pending print jobs waiting to be processed.
    1. Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
    2. Right-click on the HP DeskJet B110a icon and select See what's printing.
    3. If there are any pending jobs, clear them by selecting Cancel all documents.
  • Restart the Printer: Try restarting the printer by turning it off and on again to reset any lingering tasks in the memory.

2. Paper Feed Mechanism or Sensor Issue

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Open the printer and manually inspect the rollers for dirt or obstructions.
  3. Clean the rollers with a soft cloth slightly dampened with water or a cleaning solution specifically for printers.

Paper Sensors: The paper sensor could be malfunctioning or too sensitive, which could be causing the printer to pick up paper when it's idle. Inspect and clean the sensor area, ensuring there is no dust or paper fragments.

3. Check for "Maintenance" or "Cleaning" Processes.

  • Disable Automatic Maintenance: If your printer is set to run maintenance tasks automatically, you can try disabling this feature. Some printers do it at regular intervals to prevent ink clogs.
    • Check the printer settings or user manual for specific instructions on how to disable these maintenance tasks.
  • Firmware Update: Outdated firmware could cause erratic printer behavior. Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date. Check the HP website or use the HP Smart app to update your printer's firmware.

4. Print Spooler or Software Problem

  • Reinstall the Printer Driver: Uninstalling and reinstalling the printer driver can sometimes fix issues with print spooling or communication.
    1. Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
    2. Right-click the printer and select Remove device.
    3. Download and install the latest driver from the HP website.

5. Printer Settings or Power Management

  • Disable Energy Saving Mode: Some printers go into an energy-saving mode that might cause strange behaviors like this. Check your printer's settings to disable any sleep or energy-saving functions.

6. Reset the Printer to Factory Defaults

  • Factory Reset: To reset your printer to its factory settings, turn off the printer, then hold down the # and 6 buttons simultaneously while turning the printer back on. Hold the buttons until the printer begins the reset process. Be aware that this will erase any custom settings you may have configured.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi Raj2111 Many thanks for the advice, but unfortunately none of it worked. The current driver is dates 2006 and we've tried sseveral time to update the driver, but it will not update, the printer is connected via USB and works very well apart from this annoying glitch.
