HP DeskJet 2742e All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

My two year old printer decided to stop feeding the paper through it with no paper jam or other issues. Getting new printer from HP directly as they could not fix the problem. In the meantime I have a friend who can lend me same type of printer because I have legal documents I have to file prior to the new printer getting to me. Friend has no ink cartridges and I can use new ink cartridges I have, but can I switch them to the new printer and use them when I get the new printer?

Hi @ItsMe7,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

In general, ink cartridges are designed for a specific printer model, and they are often equipped with a chip that communicates with the printer to ensure compatibility. While some ink cartridges may be compatible across similar printer models, it's essential to check if the cartridges you have are suitable for the specific HP DeskJet 2742e model.

Here are a few things to consider.

  • Check Cartridge Compatibility: Verify whether the ink cartridges you have are compatible with both the current printer and the printer your friend is lending you. You can find this information on the cartridge packaging or in the printer's manual.
  • Printer Model Compatibility: Ensure that the ink cartridges are designed for the HP DeskJet 2742e All-In-One Printer model. The cartridges may not work correctly if they are intended for a different printer.
  • Check Cartridge Status: If the ink cartridges are partially used, it's a good idea to check their ink levels. If they are low, you may run into issues or run out of ink during important printing tasks.
  • Installation Procedure: When you insert the ink cartridges into the borrowed printer, follow the printer's manual for the correct installation procedure. Some printers may require a setup or alignment process when new cartridges are installed.
  • Storage Conditions: If the ink cartridges have been stored for an extended period, make sure they were kept in a cool, dry place. Old or improperly stored cartridges may not perform optimally.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
