I have an MFP m148 m149.  How do I use card stock paper without it jamming the printer?

This printer feeds from the front, rotates the paper 90 degrees and feeds the paper out the front.

So how does it handle card stock without jamming? Can card stock even be rotated around 90 degrees  to feed out the front?

Hi @LongHairedSfFa1 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand Using card stock in a printer like the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M148-M149 series requires some attention to settings and handling to prevent jams.

Here's a general guide to help you use card stock without issues:

  • Check Printer Specifications: Ensure that your printer is capable of handling card stock. The printer manual or specifications sheet should provide information on supported paper types and weights.
  • Select the Right Paper Weight: Card stock comes in various weights, typically measured in pounds or grams per square meter (GSM). Make sure the weight of the card stock you're using falls within the recommended range for your printer. Using paper that's too heavy can cause jams.
  • Adjust Printer Settings: Before printing, adjust the printer settings to accommodate the card stock. Look for options like "Paper Type" or "Media Type" in the printer settings menu. Select the appropriate setting for card stock to ensure the printer applies the right amount of pressure and heat during printing.
  • Use Manual Feed Tray: Some printers have a manual feed tray specifically designed for thicker media like card stock. If your printer has this feature, use it instead of the standard paper tray. Manual feed trays often have adjustable guides to accommodate different paper sizes and thicknesses.
  • Feed Card Stock One Sheet at a Time: To reduce the risk of jams, feed the card stock into the printer one sheet at a time. This allows the printer to handle each sheet individually and reduces the likelihood of multiple sheets getting stuck together.
  • Fan the Paper: Before loading the card stock into the printer, fan the sheets to prevent them from sticking together. This helps ensure smooth feeding and reduces the chances of jams.
  • Monitor Print Quality: Keep an eye on the print quality when using card stock. If you notice any issues like smudging or uneven printing, adjust the printer settings or try a different type of card stock.
  • Allow Time for Cooling: After printing, allow the card stock to cool before handling it. Thick paper can retain heat from the printing process, and handling it too soon can increase the risk of smudging or sticking.
