Printer jams on every duplex job . Used to work,  just like everything else. Did work at one time. Have set paper to plain.

When the M401 prints a duplex page, paper exits the output, pauses, and reverses back through the duplex pan to print next page.  When your duplex print job jams, where does the leading edge of the paper stop?  Is leading edge in the rear door area, duplex pan, or pick up/feeder area?  Is media torn or buckled?  After jam, open and close cartridge door.  Does jammed sheet feed out to output tray?

These printers have known issues when fuser gets worn with not duplexing. If there is not a visible jam then likely you will need to replace the fuser or just accept single sided printing or manual duplexing.

after reverse, just barely see top edge. Does not print when I open cartridge door. Thanks for reply!

Remove the cassette tray, press the green button, and make sure the duplex pan is clear.
