Hi @Lillian27,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw printer is displaying a "Jam in tray 2" error message, but there is no visible paper jam, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

Steps to Troubleshoot "Jam in Tray 2" Error

Check for Small or Torn Pieces of Paper:

  • Open tray 2 and carefully inspect it for any small, torn pieces of paper that might be stuck inside the printer. Even a small piece can cause the printer to detect a jam.
  • Remove the tray completely and check inside the printer for any paper remnants that might be stuck in the rollers or feeding mechanism.

Inspect the Paper Path:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it for safety.
  • Open all accessible panels, including the front and rear panels, to visually inspect the paper path.
  • Look for any obstructions or small pieces of paper that may not be immediately visible.

Check the Paper Settings:

  • Ensure that the paper size and type settings in your printer driver or on the printer's control panel match the paper loaded in tray 2.
  • Incorrect settings can cause the printer to think there is a jam when there isn't one.

Clean the Rollers:

  • Paper feed rollers can sometimes become dirty or worn, which can cause misfeeds that are misinterpreted as jams.
  • Clean the rollers with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water. Make sure to dry the rollers completely before closing the printer.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes clear false error messages.

Check for Sensor Issues:

  • The "Jam in tray 2" error might be caused by a malfunctioning paper sensor. This sensor could be dirty or misaligned.
  • Cleaning the sensor with a soft, dry cloth might help. Be very gentle, as sensors are delicate.

Update Printer Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Ensure your printer’s firmware is up to date. Sometimes, firmware updates include fixes for such issues. Check the HP website for any available updates for your printer model.

Inspect Tray 2:

  • Remove and reinsert tray 2 properly to ensure it is seated correctly in the printer.
  • Ensure that the paper stack is not overfilled and is properly aligned. Paper that is too tight or too loose can cause feed issues.

Steps for Linux Users

  • Check Printer Driver:
    • Ensure that you have the correct driver installed for your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw on your Linux system. You can download drivers from HP’s website or use open-source alternatives like HPLIP (HP Linux Imaging and Printing).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
